REIB Launches Tailor-Made Insurance Terms for Energy Storage Systems

Renewable Energy Insurance Broker (REIB) has launched a new generation of insurance solutions tailored specifically for Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), designed to address this rapidly evolving sector’s unique risks and requirements.

Presented during a dedicated industry breakfast in Sofia, these Special Terms for BESS Insurance mark a major step forward in providing developers, investors, and lenders with the protection and confidence needed to scale storage projects across Southeast Europe and beyond.

While traditional insurance often overlooks the complex realities of storage technology, REIB’s product was built from the ground up to reflect the operational, financial, and regulatory challenges BESS assets face. Coverage includes:

  • Business Interruption (BI) due to equipment failure resulting in loss of gross profit
  • Cyber Threats affecting energy management and control systems (EMS, SCADA)
  • Thermal Events such as fire, overheating, and explosion in high-density battery systems
  • Indirect Lightning Strikes, which can lead to equipment malfunction or shutdown

REIB’s Special Terms stand out with a customized methodology for calculating BI compensation, tailored to each project’s revenue mechanism – whether tolling, profit-sharing, or a hybrid model. This approach enables more accurate protection for revenue loss, even in cases of partial performance degradation, not just total system outages.
